I know I come off as terribly snobby when it comes to movies (The Help is racist!!!!!!), but I really, honestly do love movies. With all my heart. More than anything else.
(This post owes a whole lot to Film Critic Hulk’s ‘WHY YOU LOVE MOVIES’).
Because I can go literally anywhere anyone can imagine, either on this world or lightyears off it, with the click of a button.
Because Nicolas Cage is a person that exists.
Because of the ending of Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise.
Because Uwe Boll is just so much fun to ridicule.
Because Lars Von Trier can make me cry harder than I’ve ever cried in my life.
Because Monty Python can make me laugh harder than I’ve ever laughed in my life.
Because I’ve made some truly wonderful friends through conversations about movies.
Because movies are powerful enough to bring people together.
Because Meryl Streep is a real person that exists and that is mind-blowing to me.
Because I get to watch Carey Mulligan’s career through its entirety, and that’s more than I could hope for.
Because Leonardo DiCaprio really deserved an Oscar for Catch Me If You Can.
Because film is the one true universal language.
Because artists like Asghar Farhadi can express themselves cinematically, even under a fascist dictatorship.
Because of Rachel Weisz in The Brothers Bloom.
Because of The Brothers Bloom.
Because Tod Browning’s Dracula is still one of the scariest films I’ve ever seen.
Because Gary Oldman.
Because we live in a world in which both James Cameron and Terrence Malick can make brilliant films.
Because Woody fucking Allen.
Because Scorsese!
Because of Maya Rudolph in Away We Go.
Because of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
Because there are a million brilliant films I’ve yet to see.
Because I probably won’t be able to see most of them.
Because they make life better.
Because of Guy Maddin.
Because of Paul W.S. Anderson.
Because of Paul Thomas Anderson.
Because Gary Oldman.
Because of Hollywood, Old and New.
Because people get passionate about them.
Because of Willem Dafoe in everything, but especially The Boondock Saints.
Because people live and die by them.
Because of Mulholland Drive.
Because of Drive.
Because of Christopher Plummer.
Because there’s nothing quite like them on earth, and that’s pretty fucking special.
